Barcelona have revealed their squad list ahead of their LaLiga season starting against Mallorca, and Marc Andre ter Stegen is on it, but without a number.
That isn’t a surprise given he will be out for months with a back injury, but what is eyebrow-raising is that Inaki Pena has been given his No.1 shirt.
Joan Garcia, who will start against Mallorca, has taken the No.13, because playing in Ter Stegen’s No.1 would mean that the German captain couldn’t claim back his number when he returns from injury.
However, there may be another eventuality. Wojciech Szczęsny isn’t registered for the opener, so should Garcia get injured and Pena be forced to play, Ter Stegen’s number would be blocked off and taken, at least until Barca sell Pena.
Such complicated circumstances come from LaLiga shirt number rules, with players only allowed to wear between No.1 and No.25.
Goalkeepers are only allowed No.1, No.13 and No.25, with Barca‘s plan to keep Szczęsny wearing 25, Ter Stegen 1 and Garcia 13.
