Champions League semi-finalists Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are coming off crushing domestic defeats.
Arsenal lost a top of the table Premier League clash to Manchester City, while Atleti were defeated in the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
Despite both coming away mentally damaged, there was far more wear physically on Atleti.
The club have since announced that Alexander Sorloth and Ademola Lookman have skipped training to recover.
Atelti injury update
“The Nigerian and the Norwegian finished the Copa del Rey final with discomfort,” the club wrote.
“The club’s medical staff have conducted tests that advise maximum caution to avoid the risk of injury, so they will follow an individualised plan in the coming days, training separately from the group.
“Their return to training with their teammates will depend on how their discomfort progresses.”
Mundo Deportivo add that while neither player is injured, they’re both at high risk of injury should they aggrevate the issues they picked up.
Lookman has edema in his adductor muscle, and Sorloth has a contusion.
The pair have been two of Atleti’s most dangerous players, particularly Lookman, who was a surprise early substitution in defeat to Sociedad which now makes more sense.
Arsenal’s injury news
Arsenal’s issues are far more in the balance following defeat to City.
Captain Martin Odegaard returned for the clash, but Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori all missed out.
Arteta has suggested all four players could return in time for Atleti.
Before facing City, he said: “Some players are quite close but the turnaround is short so we will try tomorrow to push everybody and if they are in good condition they will be part of us and if not they won’t.
“They haven’t been there in the last few weeks unfortunately.”
The first leg of the semi-final takes part in Madrid on April 29th before the return at the Emirates on May 5th.
