The Copa del Rey final saw the usual pre-match tension with Real Sociedad fans booing the Spanish national anthem
La Real beat Atletico Madrid on penalties in Sevilla and their fans in blue and white displayed the Basque flag while those in red and white held up the Spanish one.
Boos were heard from the Sociedad end as the national anthem played out, as it tradition, and there were plenty of whistles when King Felipe VI was shown on screen.
Atleti fans, meanwhile, largely applauded.
Spanish national athem regularly booed
The scenes are far from unusual with fans from outside of Madrid taking similar action whether it be the Basque region, Barcelona or Andalusia.
The last final without such tension was in 2013 when Atleti beat fellow Madrid side Real Madrid.
Fans were already in a foul mood with an unpopular pre-match show seeing dancers on the pitch.
A car was even driven onto the grass as it was one of the sponsors of the Spanish football federation.
“It doesn’t seem very appropriate,” commentator Dani Garrido said.
“I don’t know how much a car weighs, but if it has people inside, it doesn’t seem like the best idea.”
The drama was quickly forgotten when Ander Barrenetxea opened the scoring for Soceidad just 14 seconds in for the earliest goal in Copa del Rey final history.
Ademola Lookman equalised in the 18th minute before Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the spot at half-time for his seventh goal in six finals.
Julian Alvarez later bagged a world-class goal to force extra time and penalties, but there Unai Marrero was the hero with two saves for victory.
