Ajax resumed their abandoned match against Groningen behind closed doors – well not quite.
The Eredivisie giants saw their original clash cancelled after just seven minutes at the weekend as fans let out fireworks across the Johann Cruyff Arena pitch.
The match was played again today without the previous 56,000 in attendance, but there was one fan.
A supporter who has just been identified as ‘Peter’ is terminally ill and the Groningen match was meant to be the last of his life.
Speaking before Sunday’s cancellation, his carer Andre from Wensenambulance Noord-Holland hospice said: “Peter has played football all his life, has also been a referee, and follows Ajax closely.
“Football is his whole life, so they wanted to let him go to one last match.”
Yet despite his fellow supporters seemingly ruining that wish, Ajax did let him into the behind-closed-doors match.
A spokesperson from his hospice told RTL: “We heard from his wife that he is very happy.”
Ajax won 2-0, with Peter’s final match at least a victory.
