Ajax legend Marco van Basten has given his take on the club’s recent fan struggles.
The Eredivisie side are disastrous at board level and it’s now being reflected in fan discontent, with fireworks sent on the pitch during a game against Groningen which led to the match being abandoned.
However, this is far from an isolated example in Dutch football, and Van Basten has blamed politicians for not taking a stand.
“It’s deeply sad,” Van Basten said on Rondo.
“Is this what Johan Cruyff expects from the Arena? I’m not angry, but disappointed. This is completely wrong, but what can you do about it?
“Politics isn’t helping. No other country is in such dire straits as the Netherlands, considering everything that’s happening around football.
“You don’t see this in England, you don’t see this in Germany, and you don’t see this in Spain. In the Netherlands, it’s rife.
“Here, the supporters are in charge. That also has to do with the politicians, who don’t take a stand.
“Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, FC Utrecht, Den Haag, and other clubs have pockets that have become dangerous. They’re large groups that are difficult to combat.”
He then finished: “You practically need the military. You even saw mortars in the stadium. Just imagine standing against them.”
