Jordan Henderson’s time as Ajax captain has earned plenty of praise, but his latest slip-up can’t be defended.
The former Liverpool captain was booked at the end of a 2-1 Europa League defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, ruling him out of the second leg.
Henderson admitted it was stupid, saying he was frustrated by time wasting, and a former midfield general Wesley Sneijder has confirmed claims that he told the official to ‘f*** off’.
“You are allowed to do a bit more as a captain. You are allowed to communicate with a referee,” Sneijder said.
“But you are not allowed to make a dismissive gesture and say f*** off. We could all see that.
“He says it himself: that is super stupid. That is really not possible.
“If someone at PSV had done this when they were 7-1 behind, it wouldn’t have mattered. Then I can understand that you don’t want to go to London.
“But in this situation it is simply not possible. Certainly not as a captain. I can almost get frustrated about it.”
Even head coach Francesco Farioli was annoyed, kicking out at a water crate on the touchline after realising his captain would be suspended.
