Ajax suffered one of the biggest embarrassments in their domestic history with a shock 6-0 hammering from AZ.
Troy Parrott bagged a hat-trick and rising star Kees Smit also netted as AZ made it through to the KNVB Beker quarter-finals in remarkable fashion.
Ajax had actually been in decent form under interim coach Fred Grim, but having agreed to give him until the end of the season, it’s all gone awry again.
Expressing his disbelief post-match, midfielder Youri Regeer was asked how such a result was possible and responded: “I’m wondering that too.
“It’s better to say: what didn’t go wrong? We’re completely falling apart as a team.
“The way you start the match, that’s not allowed. What we had started to do in recent weeks and before the winter break has now suddenly disappeared.
“The organisation just completely collapses. After two minutes, the ball is already in the net. But we can’t let our team fall apart like that.
“We’ve really stuck together as a team these past few weeks. Now I saw far too many islands on the pitch, which caused us to fall apart.
“At halftime, we warn each other that it’s a disgrace to start like that. And then after a minute, it’s back in the net. Then we get a red card and it’s completely over.”
Regeer then suggested that the travelling Ajax fans should have their tickets reimbursed.
“That wasn’t Ajax-worthy,” said the midfielder. “I think as a club and as players, we should also reimburse the supporters’ tickets.
“That’s the only thing we can do, and on Saturday we have to react against Go Ahead. But it’s going to be a huge blow.”
