LaLiga side Rayo Vallecano have released a statement on an apparent snub of AFCON winner Pathe Ciss.
Ciss returned from the tournament having won with Senegal, but unlike matchwinner in the final against Morocco, Villarreal’s Pape Gueye, Ciss received no pre-match ceremony.
In fact, the defender even scored in a 3-1 defeat to Osasuna, but that wasn’t enough for his to hide his dissatisfaction post-match.
Ciss reposted a message on Twitter/X which read: “Rayo Vallecano isn’t a team where continental champions are exactly churned out.
“Today they had a golden opportunity to pay tribute to Pathe Ciss, champion of the AFCON and they couldn’t even muster that f***ing courtesy. What a s****y club.”

While Ciss wasn’t exactly a key player for Senegal, racking up just 53 minutes across five substitute appearances, the poster may have a point.
In the summer of 2024 Rayo put on a full pre-match show and guard of honour for Sergio Camello after Spain’s success at the Olympics.
Rayo have now responded to the story, saying that they thought a celebration would be inappropriate given the minute’s silence for passengers who died in train accidents across the country.
They wrote: “Rayo Vallecano reports that yesterday the tribute to our player Pathé Ciss, following the conquest of the Africa Cup of Nations, was not carried out.
“It was considered inappropriate to hold any kind of celebration on a day of mourning in which the team wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence in memory of the people who died in the tragic train accidents of Adamuz and Gelida .
“The well-deserved recognition for Pathé Ciss will take place in the lead-up to the next match, which will be played in Vallecas on Saturday, February 7, against Real Oviedo.”
