Lamine Yamal’s World Cup attire continues to draw headlines, and his latest was no diffeent.
The Spain winger has been wearing fake glasses in a LeBron James tribute and his necklaces have garnered attention.
Lamine has been wearing diamond encrusted pendants worth close to half a million made by an artist from his neighbourhood in Barcelona.
The first related to the working class area of Rocafonda where he grew up, and the latest was Batman – a passion he shares with his idol Neymar.
Yet his biggest message wasn’t revealed until kick-off.
EGO Yamal
Lamine had an allice band to keep his hair out of his eyes, and it was soon noticed it had some words written on it.
Zoomed in pictures revealed it read ‘EGO Yamal’.
The phrase reportedly relates to a nickname his haters have given him on TikTok and other social media platforms.
It also had the logo of his own Adidas range, suggesting he will likely make money from it.
Defending the message, teammate Aymeric Laporte spoke out.
“I don’t call it ego, it’s more about publicity and marketing,” he said.
“He’s a very attractive player because he’s really fun to watch. Football is a spectacle, and he’s delivering that on the pitch.”
Lamine was also defended by his Barcelona teammate and France regular Jules Kounde.
“I know Lamine very well,” he said. “I know he’s a very strong player, an ambitious guy who says things as he thinks and sees them.”
Kounde was responding after Lamine dismissed France’s status as favourites.
Asked if there’s a clear favourite for 2026 by Cadena SER, he said: “No. I don’t think there’s any national team where you can say, ‘It’s impossible to beat them.’”
The interviewer then suggested France, and Lamine responded: “No.
“They didn’t beat us at the European Championship. So they can’t be better than us.”
When their form was put to the Barcelona starlet, he was just as definitive.
“That doesn’t matter, the group stage means nothing, look at Germany, for example,” he said.
“The World Cup starts now. The World Cup starts now. From this point on, it has nothing to do with the earlier matches.
“We could have drawn every game, and now we eliminate France – and that’s how it is. So I don’t think there’s any favourite.
“Obviously France comes in with very good form, playing at a high level, and they have excellent players.
“But I don’t think they’re above anyone else. Above anyone, really. For me, no team is above any other team.”
