Jose Mourinho may have called him ‘the little fat guy‘ but Wesley Sneijder is back playing at a decent level.
The 41-year-old, who won the European treble with Mourinho at Inter in 2010, made his debut for Dutch fourth tier side OSM’75 at the weekend in a 1-0 win.
The victory was over league leaders Focus’07, and while that should set up a thrilling end to the season, the result could be in jeopardy.
Focus’07 are now protesting the result, claiming Sneijder’s 70th minute substitution was one more than the rules permitted.
Sneijder was the fourth player to come on for OSM’75, and now the Dutch Football Association [KNVB] are reviewing the incident.
Commenting on what happened, Sneijder said: “Our coach said one of the substitutions was due to a head injury, and in that case it’s permissible. But maybe there was a miscommunication.
“It will be frustrating if that protest is upheld, although I had a good afternoon anyway.”
Saying he had a difficult afternoon, the former Real Madrid man added: “That was partly because I’d just come from Los Angeles and had to get going straight away.
“But football is still the best game, so if you can do it, why wouldn’t you? This gives me a lot of satisfaction.”
