Wesley Sneijder has admitted he’s still annoyed about not winning the 2010 Ballon d’Or, and he may have a point.
The former Dutch midfielder was playing for Inter Milan at the time and had by far the best season of his career.
He was instrumental in Inter winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia, the Italian Super Cup, and of course, the Champions League.
After that astonishing season, he then led the Dutch to the World Cup final, narrowly losing to Spain in South Africa.
Despite all of that, Messi still picked up one of his eight Ballon d’Or wins, perhaps the most unjust of his career.
“It was a little unfair that I was not crowned with the Ball of Gold in 2010 and Messi won it,” he told Egyptian medai.
“Although I’m not a guy who cries about it: the Ballon d’Or is an individual award, and what I prefer is to win collective trophies.
“If I had to choose between the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or, I would choose the Champions League that I won, I am very happy with that title.”
In fact, there’s one defeat that still botheres Sneijder more.
“We deserved to win in 2010 against Spain, but the Spanish team was more than incredible and surpassed us,” he said.
“Reaching the final is a wonderful achievement that I dreamed of and I’m still heartbroken for losing that title.”
