Xherdan Shaqiri is eternal.
The Swiss icon appeared to have called it a day with a move to MLS, but he’s now back making waves in Europe.
Since leaving Liverpool as a Champions League and Premier League winner in 2021, Shaqiri had an underwhelming stint at Lyon but then became a hero at Chicago Fire in America.
It looked like a fitting swansong for the former Inter Milan and Bayern Munich man, but he very much had other ideas.
Now aged just 33, Shaqiri has returned to his first-ever side, FC Basel, having left them in the Swiss Super League to join Bayern back in 2012.
To say things are going well would be an understatement. The attacking midfielder has five goals and seven assists in 17 games since returning and has been virtually unplayable.
His most recent match against title contenders Servette saw Shaqiri grab all three of his side’s goals in a 3-1 win to send them top of the Super League.
And post-match the rave reviews came in, with leading Swiss outlet Blick talking about how ‘Shaqiri-mania’ has gripped the nation.
Discussing his most recent performance they commented: “Hardly anyone doubts that Xherdan Shaqiri is the best individual player in the league.
“The 33-year-old is unstoppably hoarding points in the Super League, has five goals and seven assists after his hat trick against Geneva – and has single-handedly shot FCB to the top of the Super League table.”
Shaqiri famously scores a worldie at every major international tournament he features in dating back to 2012, and given his current heroics, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he reversed his international retirement and bagged another banger at the 2026 World Cup.
