FC Basel were forced to cancel their city centre title celebrations after a fan suffered a serious injury.
The club, led by attacker Xherdan Shaqiri, won their first Swiss Super League title since 2017, but fans waiting to see the trophy in the city were unable to do so.
A supporter was taken to hospital in critical condition after an accident at the Wankdorf station and the club have now confirmed he lost his leg.
Basel wrote: “Due to the many inquiries and your tremendous outpouring of support, we are providing a brief and unique update on the situation of the FCB fan following the accident at Wankdorf station last Sunday. This has been agreed upon with the victim and his family.
“We are very relieved that the fan is now in stable condition. He tragically lost a leg in the accident, along with other serious—but fortunately curable—injuries.
“We send you strength for your journey back, and our thoughts are with you and your family. We’re already looking forward to welcoming you back to Joggeli as soon as possible. All together, always together.”
The club had earlier confirmed that the trophy wouldn’t be paraded at the usual spot of the Barfi balcony, saying: “There was a personal accident at Wankdorf station in which an FCB fan was seriously injured.
“In such moments, health takes precedence, which is why the club has decided to cancel the celebration on the Barfi balcony. Fight, dear fan!”
