A two-goal match-winning performance would be enough for most players, but not Ajax’s Wout Weghorst.
The Netherlands striker continued his solid start in Amsterdam by earning his team three points with two goals in a 2-1 win over NEC.
However, taken off in the 68th minute and unable to complete his hat-trick, Weghorst went after head coach Francesco Farioli post-match.
“If I were the coach and my striker was on the field in the 65th minute with two goals, I wouldn’t substitute him,” he said.
“We will talk about it, of course, and then I’ll tell you what I think about it. I like to play ninety minutes and hurt myself. I’ve done that my whole career. So this is new to me.
“But this is Farioli’s choice, his tactics. This is what he believes in. He has his philosophy and I have mine.”
Ouch.
Farioli on his part had a rather fitting explanation, saying: “Wout has been ill. He only trained for forty minutes yesterday. We have to calculate and look at every minute at the moment.”
Weghorst later added: “It’s not about me being right. It’s about Ajax’s interests and what works. At the moment, this works. We win matches like this.”
The win kept Ajax in second in the Eredivisie and within reaching distance of leaders PSV, seven points behind with a game in hand.
