Unai Simon’s job may well be at risk, but as far as he’s concerned, Athletic Bilbao comes first.
Spain’s no.1 started the season injured, but even upon his return he’s unexpectedly been consigned to the bench.
The reasoning isn’t quite clear, with head coach Ernesto Valverde so far non-committal on his return.
Yet even with Simon spending all three LaLiga games this season on the bench, the Euro 2024 winner showed he isn’t at all bitter about Julen Agirrezabala stealing the spotlight.
The 23-year-old academy graduate has had an impressive start to the campaign and capped it off with a match-winning five-save display in a 2-1 win against Real Madrid.
One of his stops was a penalty save on Kylian Mbappe and as San Mames lit up, so did Simon.
Newly released footage shows the 27-year-old was celebrating wildly, despite the effort potentially jeopardising his career chances.

There is talk that Simon has been on the bench as he’s yet to fully recover from his injury, but he has made his first start against Elfsborg in the Europa League, suggesting that Valverde has a tough situation to manage.
