The relationship that was never supposed to work finally showed signs of tension in its last moments.
Two of the most fiery characters in Serie A, no one expected Antonio Conte to get on with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, but there was a remarkable turnaround.
Napoli won the league under Conte, and despite leaving this summer, things have been incredibly cordial, with Conte even forfeiting next season’s salary as a gesture of goodwill.
However, when it came to his former club Inter Milan, Conte drew a line in rather amusing scenes.
Conte shared his final press conference with the club president and owner to address his farewell in good-mannered scenes.
But he had to interject when De Laurentiis commented: “Without the injuries, you would have easily won the championship again.”
“No, no, absolutely not,” Conte retorted with a straight face.
The president then went further, saying: “Inter is such a great team that in Europe, they performed worse than last year.”
Visibly annoyed, Conte addressed his terrible record in Europe, adding: “They did better than us.
“They progressed through the league phase. We didn’t.”
As for who’s next, reports in Italy claim Max Allegri is ready to jet straight in after his dismissal from crisis club AC Milan is confirmed.
