One of the revelations of Euro 2024, Turkey and Real Madrid’s Arda Güler hit the headlines for the wrong reason.
The 19-year-old sensation bagged an absolutely stunning strike against Georgia in a 3-1 win, and given his signing for Madrid last summer, he’s understandably been in the spotlight.
So intense has the media focus been on Güler that a video of him during training quickly went viral.
The youngster appears to be marched away from the session by head coach Vincenzo Montella, before going to train by himself. Numerous fans and outlets speculated that he was ‘expelled’ over bad behaviour, while many of those more tribal followers attacked Montella for doing so.
With the video headline news in Turkey and Spain, the Turkish FA have since passed comment with a public statement.
They wrote: “A video during the training of our National Team this evening was circulated on social media platforms.
“Before the training, due to pain suffered by our national football player Arda Güler, it was agreed between our technical staff and the player that he should do individual training in order to prepare himself in the healthiest way for the Czech match.
“The training seen in the relevant video was not within the scope determined for Arda Güler, and our national football player was later directed to solo training for protective purposes.
“We would like to remind you that our sensible citizens whose hearts beat for the Turkish National Team should not rely on such content.”
Turkey face Czechia in their final Group F game on June 26, with a win sending them through to the knockouts. A draw or defeat could still see them qualify as a third-placed team thanks to the three points they collected against Georgia.
