Tonda Eckert has become one of the biggest names in English football over the past week, but he may have been up to his tricks far longer than we were aware.
The Southampton coach was found to have sent staff to opponents’ training sessions to film footage in what has been dubbed ‘Spygate’ by the British press.
Southampton have since been kicked out of the Championship play-offs ahead of the final, and more and more details are coming out over allegations earlier in his coaching career.
Now in France, it’s being speculated that he could have been spying as many as 12 years ago.
SoFoot are among the French outlets to point out that Eckert was an assistant with the victorious German national team at the 2014 World Cup.
Germany knocked France out in the quarter-finals, and in the group stage Didier Deschamps complained about a drone.
“You’re talking about the drone right?” Deschamps said during a press conference.
“Apparently drones are used more and more. It’s not up to me.
“FIFA handles this and has been carrying out an inquiry. We don’t want an intrusion into our privacy but it’s very hard to fight this these days.
“The drone was not from us I didn’t do anything special about the drone.”
Was it from Eckert? We’ll probably never know.
