Thomas Tuchel has responded to some brutal comments from Uli Hoeness in regard to his development of young players.
Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich‘s 2-1 Bundesliga win over Eintracht Frankfurt honorary president Hoeness was his usual honest self about Tuchel.
Discussing the departing coach at the FAZ congress, Hoeness said: “I don’t blame Thomas Tuchel, he often had dinner with me at Tegernsee, I get on very well with him. But he has a different attitude.
“He doesn’t think he can improve on Davies, Pavlovic or Musiala. If it doesn’t work, you should buy another player.
“I think you should work hard on the ones you have and give them confidence.
“I expect a good coach to improve young players and give them a hug sometimes.”
Explaining why it’s so important economically, the 72-year-old added: “We can spend 100 million euros on a Harry Kane once, maybe again on a German player, but not four or five times.”
When this was put to Tuchel after Bayern’s latest win, the German was stunned.
“That is of course so far from reality. That’s almost no…” he said before pausing to choose his words carefully.
“I don’t even know how to answer that.”
He added: “If we have proven anything in the coaching team, it is that young players, especially from the academy, always have a place with us in training and, based on their performance, always have a place on the field.
“To bring the three examples into this false content… No, I can’t understand that, I have very little understanding of that now. I find it absolutely baseless.”
Speaking about the timing of the comments before taking on Real Madrid in the Champions League, Tuchel finished. “There couldn’t be a worse time [to say that].”
