Uli Hoeness may have gone too far again with his criticism of Thomas Tuchel.
The honorary Bayern Munich president took aim at the departing head coach in an interview, saying that he doesn’t want to improve young players and he’d rather buy in a replacement.
The comments were put to Tuchel after his side’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and it’s fair to say the coach was rather stunned, having to briefly pause to bite his tongue.
Two of Tuchel’s most vocal critics this season, Sky Sports duo Didi Hamann and Lothar Mattheus have since come to the former Chelsea manager’s defence.
The latter commented: “Nobody needs these headlines. Thomas Tuchel is rightly upset – to put it formally. I would be pissed.
“Perhaps the club needs to say to Hoeneß: ‘Uli, we love you and thank you for everything you have done for us. But please stop giving interviews like this.’”
Germany legend Stefan Kuntz added his thoughts, saying: “Tuchel certainly moaned a bit too much last summer. Hoeneß’ criticism, however, is something extremely insulting to a coach’s honour – and what’s more, it’s wrong.
“I can remember Schürrle and Holtby in Mainz, then we had Weigl in Dortmund, Diaby and Nkunku at Paris St. Germain – the criticism is technically incorrect.
“Tuchel should have pointed this out in order to prevent the dispute from escalating in the first place. That would have been the best solution.”
Sport1 pundit and former Bayer star Mario Basler commented: “He actually always knows what he’s saying. And with me he can always say whatever he wants.
“But I was surprised and found it far-fetched. There is no reason why he is now attacking Tuchel again.
“What does Ralf Rangnick think when he hears a statement like that? Every coach has to think about it: That could happen to me too. This doesn’t make Eberl’s work any easier. I don’t blame Uli Hoeness, but he made a big mistake.”
