Two may be about to become three in the European Super League.
UEFA and FIFA’s loss at the Court of Justice of the European Union has opened the door for plans to resume for the breakaway league, with the court ruling that the organisations cannot block the formation of rival competitions.
On the face of it, that isn’t as grand as it sounds, with Real Madrid and Barcelona the only remaining teams not to denounce the ESL.
Throughout the day giants from across world football have reaffirmed their position against the league’s formation, including clubs as big as Manchester United, Inter and Ateltico Madird.
However, from the Italian side of things, reigning Serie A champions Napoli are yet to comment, and that is not a coincidence.
Italian newswire ANSA report that Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is in favour of the competition, as long as it is based on meritocracy.
De Laurentiis expressed that view when the original plans for ESL spectacularly bombed in April 2021, and little has changed since then.
