With the Argentine Primera División on its final matchday, tensions are high at the top, and also at the bottom with San Lorenzo.
The 15-time league champions finished their season with yet another defeat, this time a 1-0 against Tigre, capping off a horror campaign for the team famously supported by the Pope.
With giants San Lorenzo, Newell’s Old Boys and Rosario Central all at risk of going down, the Primera División and Argentine Football Association rather hilariously cancelled relegation this season, instead bringing up three teams to make the 27-team league a 30-team league in 2025.
Still, San Lorenzo supporters were fuming with what they saw, and created a terrifying atmosphere at full-time.
However, rather than the players heading for the dressing room, summer signing and new club captain Iker Muniain made them stick around.
The Athletic Bilbao legend forced his teammates to stay in the centre circle, leading to some emotional scenes as the abuse rained down.
The gesture saw Muniain receive plenty of plaudits, particularly on social media and in the press, yet the club’s ultras weren’t subdued by it.
Supporters gathered outside the stadium post-match to demand the resignation of coach Miguel Ángel Russo.
Russo was also forced to cancel his post-match press conference over security concerns, while the players were held inside the stadium and only allowed to leave once the protests had subdued.
