There has been a concerning update on Real Madrid’s Raul Asencio during his latest bout of gastroenteritis.
The defender has missed multiple games this season with viruses but the most recent struggle has seen him hospitalised.
Cadena SER report that he’s lost as much as six kilos having initially fallen ill before Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.
Asencio’s illness update
The outlet claims that Asencio could be dealing with a esophageal ulcer and ‘remains under medical supervision receiving intravenous fluids’.
The issue was reportedly flagged up before the trip to Munich and Asencio was isolated from his teammates to avoid a potential spread.
The 23-year-old has missed matches before due to gastroenteritis, but this appears to be his first hospitalisation.
Asencio’s tricky season
Having forced his way into the team under Xabi Alonso, the centre back has since become a bit-part player under Alvaro Arbeloa.
There have been reports of a falling out between the coach and the player with Asencio left out of earlier squads without an injury update.
He also suffered a nasty injury against Benfica on February 25th.
A collision in the 2-1 win saw him lay on the floor for several minutes before medics carefully placed him onto a stretcher.
Speaking after, Arbeloa said: “Asencio has gone to the hospital and hopefully it’s just a scare.
“It’s something to do with his neck, it doesn’t seem serious but he’s gone to the hospital.”
He thankfully returned nearly two weeks later, but has only featured once since that date at the start of March.
At the start of April he caused some media uproar when leaving Real’s training ground.
A fan asked Asencio why he hasn’t been playing and the defender responded: “You have to ask Arbeloa.”
After the clip went viral he responded on social media trying to shut down any drama.
“I don’t understand all the fuss you’re making about this,” he wrote.
“The manager is the one in charge; he plays and takes out the players.
“I have the utmost respect for him and all my teammates.”
