Two professional Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie players have been forced out of training over and ongoing saga dubbed ‘Passport-gate’.
Both Dean James of Go Ahead Eagles and Nathan Tjoe-A-On of Willem II have been accused by rivals of being ineligible for their teams.
The pair recently became Indonesia internationals and opponents claim they will have had to give up their Dutch passports in order to do so.
Doing so would have required a work permit, which lawyers for opposing teams claim neither had, making them ineligible for recent victories.
The Dutch football association recently commented on the matter saying that no points penalties or replays are currently under consideration.
Yet the latest developments suggest problems for the teams and players involved.
Both players are now out of training, with a Go Ahead spokesperson saying: “We are following the advice of the FBO and the KNVB.”
Willem II gave more in-depth analysis, adding: “The FBO provided the clubs and the KNVB with advice last week. Following this, we and the player have carefully examined the file.
“It has become apparent that a number of legal steps are still required regarding the work permit.
“In line with the advice of the KNVB and the FBO, Nathan Tjoe-A-On cannot perform any work as soon as he returns from his international duties.
“The process to arrange this properly has now been set in motion. We hope to receive clarity in the short term, both for Nathan and for the club.”
