Iker Casillas has given Real Madrid a list of alternatives for Jose Mourinho, and they may well end up needing them.
The legendary Spanish goalkeeper was known to have fallen out with the returning coach during his first spell at the club from 2010 to 2013.
And having already said he wouldn’t bring back Mourinho during a media event, Casillas has clarified who would be better.
The ex-shot-stopper said Alonso was the perfect coach, and has now given nine other names better than Mourinho.
He wrote in a social media post: “Unai Emery, Kompany, Xabi Alonso
Cesc Fabregas, Arteta, Iraola, Zidane, Bordalas, Iñigo Pérez, Del Bosque.”
Casillas had earlier wrote of Como’s Fabregas: “Wonderful coach is Cesc,” with the former Barcelona midfielder saying he wouldn’t rule out Madrid in a recent interview.
Backing up his Alonso point, he added: “They asked me at a LaLiga event with MovistarPlus who would be my coach for Real Madrid: Xabi Alonso.”
He later clarified on Mourinho: “I have no problem with Mourinho.
“He seems like a great professional to me. I don’t want him at Real Madrid.
“I think other coaches would be better equipped to coach at the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more.”
Despite his protestations, Casillas likely won’t get his wish, with president Florentino Perez pushing head with Mourinho.
However, his bold decision to call an election has caused chaos with the hire.
Perez is likely to face a challenge from Enrique Riquelme, which would force him to step down as president until the process is completed on June 7th.
That would delay Mourinho’s signing which was expected to take place this weekn before he called the election.
It gets worse too, Benfica have agreed a €7million compensation for Mourinho, but it only applies for the 10 days after the end of the season.
If Real don’t get the deal done in time, the second year of Mourinho’s contract will come into effect, making him an even more expensive hire for Madrid.
There are too other outcomes too, Riquelme doesn’t run, and Perez is re-elected on May 24th and able to announce the signing.
Or Riquelme runs and pulls off an unlikely victory, and may well have other ideas in the dugout.
