Concerns over Niklas Sule’s fitness continue to dominate the news at Borussia Dortmund.
The former Bayern Munich centre-back was barely used during the 2023/24 season and then before the Champions League final pictures of him looking overweight went viral.
It’s since been reported that BVB have told Sule to regain his fitness or he won’t play for them again.
It’s certainly an awkward situation for the 28-year-old, and it’s now gotten a lot more embarrassing, with one of his former coaches chastising him.
Markus Babbel, who gave Sule his debut as head coach of Hoffenheim in 2013, tore into the defender in an interview with Ran.
“I find it almost outrageous to earn so much money and then say: ‘I don’t care how I walk around. I don’t care what the club thinks of me’,” he began.
“If he thinks everything he’s doing is fine, then say to Borussia Dortmund: ‘Hey guys, I’m sorry. I’ve had enough. I’ve made it, I want to live. Don’t be mad at me, but that’s it for me.’”
Babbel went on to recall that Sule finds life difficult without junk food, but you have to make sacrifices as a footballer due to the financial reward.
He added: “They had asked me to have a conversation with a highly talented player. He was there with his family. He ate everything from pizza to burgers to schnitzel and fries all week.”
