Niklas Süle is looking to re-enter the fold at Borussia Dortmund after a season to forget.
The defender ranked 14th in games played for BVB last season as he dropped out of favour in defence and provoked criticism over his fitness.
Pictures ahead of the Champions League final against Real Madrid appeared to show Süle overweight, and stories later emerged that he’d been told by Dortmund staff that he wouldn’t be back in the squad until he got himself in shape.
Well, Süle has done exactly that, arriving for the 2024/25 season looking incredibly trim just days after his former coach Markus Babbel criticised his fitness.
Commenting on the dramatic weight loss, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke was very complimentary, saying: “I thought: My God, we have a new player!
“It’s admirable how he managed that. I prefer it a thousand times more when someone admits a mistake and draws the appropriate conclusions, then that’s cool. He is a huge player in central defence.”
According to Sky, Süle took a nutritionist and fitness coach with him on holiday to Mallorca before returning in great shape.
