Nick Woltemade’s whirlwind year from obscurity to a €90million transfer has piled on the pressure in Germany.
The new Newcastle man is now Julian Nagelsmann’s main hope for the 2026 World Cup, but hasn’t impressed in his first two games since being awarded that role.
Having failed to score in a shock 2-0 defeat to Slovakia, the former Stuttgart man bagged an assist in a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland, but that wasn’t enough to avoid boos from the crowd in Cologne when he was taken off in the second half.
The man who replaced him, Nadiem Amiri, was asked to comment on the scenes, and said: “I don’t approve.
“Nick a young player who’s just gone through a difficult phase. With a lot of transfer issues, back and forth.”
Pascal Groß was also asked for his view, and said he didn’t notice the boos, adding: “I never finds such things good, because he’s one of us, a player who gives his all, who represents Germany. We should all support him.”
