Roberto De Zerbi is going to have to do a lot of convincing at Marseille, particularly when it comes to Raymond Domenech.
It’s widely reported that the Italian will become OM‘s next head coach after mutually leaving Brighton at the end of the 2023/24 season.
The decision comes after the club pursued Sérgio Conceição, but failed to come to an agreement, while in the background club legend Habib Beye was also linked.
Former France and Lyon manager Raymond Domenech saw plenty of logic in hiring Beye to rebuild the club, and thinks De Zerbi has plenty to prove.
“There was a great project to do with Habib Beye. He was perfect,” Domenech told L’Equipe.
“The club is in reconstruction. There are no certainties with Beye either, but there is no point in making us dream with De Zerbi. And paying him an incredible salary.”
Domenech then went on to attack De Zerbi’s track record, adding: “Brighton, how many of the last Premier League seasons did they compete in? He’s behind all the big guys.
“Brighton are Reims, well done. It’s his place. He was at Sassuolo before and only spent one year at Donetsk…
“I have nothing against the fact that he is Italian. I think he realised that next year he was going to finish 15th at Brighton, and that’s why he left. But I’m not saying he’s a bad manager.”
