Football’s overloaded calendar is even bridging one of the sport’s biggest divides after Marc Andre ter Stegen’s latest injury.
The goalkeeper, who only recently became Germany’s no.1, was left writhing in pain during a 5-1 win over Villarreal.
It’s now been revealed by Barcelona‘s captain has a complete tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee and he will be out of action for eight months.
The news has rocked Barcelona and LaLiga, with injuries a huge subject thanks to the ever-expanding football calendar bringing more Champions League matches and a new Club World Cup this season.
So shocking is Ter Stegen’s prognosis, that even those at Real Madrid are expressing their concern.
Speaking to the media, Carlo Ancelotti said: “I want to convey that it makes me very sad that such important players as Ter Stegen, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, is injured. I hope he can recover soon.
Asked what can change to avoid these types of injuries, he added: “At the moment we cannot do much, because nothing is going to change this season. The world of football must do some reflection.”
Discussing Ter Stegen’s injury and imminent surgery, doctor David Barastegui said: “Previously he had a disease of the same tendon, a tendinopathy, which required two surgeries.
“But the rupture is more serious, or more disabling than what he had previously, the entire tendon must be sewn up.
“There is no direct relationship between this injury and the fact that he had had surgery twice, he has been competing at the highest level these years and has had no problems.
“With the tendons, the surgeries are attempted to be carried out as quickly as possible, as long as the pain and inflammation allow it, and depending on his evolution he will be out for more or less time, no less than six months, but the tendency is usually high, around eight.”
