Manuel Neuer took the opportunity to end speculation over a Germany World Cup return following Bayern Munich’s 5-0 win over Hamburg.
The 2014 German champion had been mooted to come out of retirement in the midst of current No.1 Marc Andre ter Stegen losing his starting sport with Barcelona.
In fact, even his agent, Thomas Kroth, poured petrol on the fire, saying: “If Julian Nagelsmann sees a problem in that position, and Manuel is healthy and asked, then Manu certainly won’t say no.”
However, Neuer has now completely contradicted his agent, saying: “The fact is that I have decided not to play for the national team anymore.
When reporter Britta Hofmann asked whether this decision would definitely remain in place – “come what may” – Neuer clearly answered “yes”.
Asked about his agent’s comments, he finished: “We haven’t talked about it.
“I think it wasn’t entirely clear from the context that it was a decision that I would definitely come back. I don’t know exactly what the quote said, but I think you can read it again.”
