Ousmane Dembele’s attempts at leadership with PSG instantly got him in trouble with Luis Enrique.
Paris were beaten 3-1 by a coach-less Rennes on Friday night, and could now lose their Ligue 1 lead to Lens who are two points back and yet to play this weekend.
It was a dire performance for PSG and their third defeat of the season, and post-match reigning Ballon d’Or winner Dembele tried to set an example.
“We started the match very poorly, Rennes played a very good game,” he told Ligue 1+. “And then I think we need to show more desire.
“We have to play for Paris Saint-Germain to win matches, because if we play alone on the pitch, it’s not going to work. We’re not going to win the titles we want.
“Last season, we always put the club first, before thinking about ourselves.
“I think we need to rediscover that, especially in these kinds of matches. PSG should come first, not individual players.”
That all may seem pretty harmless from a leading player after a defeat, but Luis Enrique made sure it was anything but run of the mill.
Luis Enrique’s brutal response to Ousmane Dembele
“ The players’ statements after the match are worthless. Absolutely worthless,” the Spaniard said when he was told.
“And so are those of the coaches. I am the person responsible for the team.
“I will not allow any player to think that he is more important than the club. Not me, not the sporting director, not the president, not the club.
“So, these statements are worthless. They are the product of anger after a match.”
