Loris Karius has admitted he’s yet to hear from Germany coach Jurgen Klopp.
Karius was key in getting Schalke promoted to the Bundesliga and has put in two impressive performances in back-to-back games, even being named Man of the Match against Bayern Munich.
He’s now being heavily touted for a first Germany call up under Klopp, who he played for at Liverpool.
However, he’s admitted he’s yet to hear from the Champions League winner 12 days before he takes his first Germany match.
Karius admits no contact from Klopp yet
“No, no contact,” he said after a 3-1 win away at Union Berlin.
“I’m not assessing anything realistically or unrealistically. I’m not thinking about it.
“If people associate me with that, then that’s a recognition of the work I’m doing. That’s great. Everything else is not up to me. I’ll just carry on.”
Klopp is set to name his squad in five days time, and Marc Andre ter Stegen has already revealed talks, suggesting it doesn’t look good for Karius.
There’s history too, his last match under Klopp was the infamous 2022 Champions League final where he was at fault for two goals in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
Karius has also been backed for a call-up, with Germany’s goalkeeping options open after Manuel Neuer retired and no outstanding candidate has come forward.
Matthaus backs Karius for a Germany call up
Speaking after the Bayern draw, Germany legend Lothar Matthaus said: “Performances like today’s naturally help to open the door wider.
“As far as I know, Loris Karius has a German passport. And anyone who has a German passport…”
“If someone plays like Karius did today and continues to play like this for a few more games, then he automatically moves into the spotlight.”
His coach, Miron Muslic, added: “That’s Loris, and I expected nothing less from him.
“He’s been performing at an extremely high level from day one. We’ll need him like this for the next ten months.”
