The world of football was enthralled on Thursday evening by a Lionel Messi headline that was almost too good to be true, and unsurprisingly – it wasn’t.
A Tweet (because everyone knows how reliable that platform is now) began to circulate that Messi‘s 12-year-old son, Thiago, had scored 11 goals in a 12-0 win for Inter Miami’s U13s.
Originating from an Argentine football fan account with 7000 followers, the story began to be picked up, with outlets as big as Marca and Mundo Deportivo in Spain reposting it.
Fellow giants Sky Germany and AD.nl followed suit, while Goal.com in England also took the bait.
However, just a small amount of research shows that the win over Atalanta never happened.
American sports cover youth games in extensive detail, and no record of the match can be found online.
In fact, the official MLS NEXT website lists U13 games, but there is no such scoreline or match.
Furthermore, many of the websites and social accounts that reposted the story included the minutes of the goals, with the young Messi scoring first in the 12th minute and last in 87th.
U13 matches in MLS and beyond only have 35-minute halves.
