Lionel Messi was back calling rivals clowns as Argentina beat Peru 1-0 in World Cup qualifying.
The footballing legend and Albiceleste captain assisted Lautaro Martinez’s winner in a heated match that put them five points clear at the top of CONMEBOL qualifying.
Peru went all out in terms of physicality, culminating in one moment where two defenders went for Messi and Carlos Zambrano wiped him out.
After the moment, broadcasters TyC Sports picked up Messi’s reaction, where he could be seen asking Zambrano “What are you doing Bobo?” calling the defender a clown.
The comments are a hilarious throwback to the 2022 World Cup where Messi was picked up saying to Wout Weghorst: “What are you looking at, Bobo? Go over there, Bobo,” after his side knocked out the Netherlands on course to victory.
Messi was the winner again, but it turns out that Zambrano wasn’t the only one annoyed with him.
Veteran Paolo Guerrero suggested there was some refereeing bias post-match, particularly in favour of the Barcelona icon.
“I don’t know what your analysis of this game is, but physically I think we were on the same level,” he said. “It’s a bit difficult when the referee is conditioned against us.
“They pushed us and didn’t even call a foul, Messi was touched with a finger and it was all a foul. Is this relevant in your analysis or does it not matter to you? No one says it because it’s Messi.
“But it’s not just Messi, it’s everyone. Any little contact is a foul. And on the other hand, they pushed us and it was nothing. That makes everything more difficult, it puts pressure on.”
