Jurgen Klopp has commented on rumours he was heavily involved in Leipzig’s sacking of Ole Werner.
Werner was dismissed from the job after just a single season where he took the team to third place and back into the Champions League.
However, last summer he was far from first choice, with Leipzig facing numerous rejections in Klopp’s first window since becoming Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer.
Rumours were rife before Werner’s sacking that Klopp and the company’s management team wanted the coach gone straight away, and even pushed for his dismissal during the season.
The former Liverpool coach has now confirmed as much while working as a pundit at the World Cup.
Klopp admits involvement in Werner sacking
“We are acting in an advisory capacity as the Global Team,” he said. “But of course, advisory means that we were involved in the decision-making process.
“We analysed the season. Ole did a great job, we qualified for the Champions League. But we also have to look ahead at the same time.
“When we considered what the workload might look like, then the decision was made in Leipzig to make a change.”
The rumour mill suggests that former Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis will take the job despite just being relegated with Real Mallorca.
Klopp was asked to comment, and responded: “I really can’t say anything about that right now. I’m not participating in any speculation.
“Everything that needs to be said about this comes from Leipzig and not from – where are we these days? – Dallas.”
