There were some heart-warming scenes at Argentina’s latest press conference as Lionel Scaloni shared a special moment with a journalist.
The coach was speaking ahead of two final qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, the first of which could be Lionel Messi‘s last in front of his home fans.
Messi won the 2022 World Cup under Scaloni’s guidance, having also played with him as a teammate, and ahead of the game Venezuela he was asked if playing with and coaching the icon was a career highlight by journalist Maxi de Vita Lemo, from Radio Ciudad de Venado Tuerto.
“Having shared a field with him, passing him the ball, and sharing that was incredible,” Scaloni responded.
“It’s exciting to have shared the World Cup win with Leo; what happens tomorrow will be exciting.
“And if it really is his last, we’ll make sure he plays one more game in our country. And you have to enjoy it, as I always say.”
Scaloni then went to field the next question, before pointing at De Vita Lemo and saying: “He’s crying! It wasn’t my intention!”
Off the microphone the teary journalist replied: “You gave me the greatest joy of my life.”
The comment got a round of applause, and then Scaloni himself began to cry and the next reporter asked if he should wait.
“No, no, go ahead. Because otherwise, I think we’ll have to end it here… Seeing him made me feel this way,” he said with a smile.
