Eredivisie hopefuls FC Dordrecht has suspended their first summer training session amid reports head coach Dirk Kuyt is leaving.
Kuyt is claimed to be heading to Fenerbahce, but not as a head coach, instead an assistant under new hire Ismail Kartal.
Fenerbahce sporting director Cihan Kamer confirmed that their former winger was returning to the club, much to Dordrecht’s ‘astonishment’.
FC Dordrecht General Manager Hans de Zeeuw said: “We are surprised and astonished by the reports reaching us from Turkey that Dirk has reached an agreement with Fenerbahce.
“That is premature. No contract has been signed, although there has been contact with agent Rob Jansen, who is currently in the United States, regarding Fenerbahce’s interest.”
Dirk Kuyt’s footballing career
Kuyt is best known for his World Cup final with the Netherlands and his six-year stint at Liverpool, the team he played the most for.
He left the Reds for Fener as a player in 2012 and became a fan favourite with 26 goals in 95 games.
Retiring in 2018, Kuyt soon took to coaching but hasn’t exactly impresed.
He joined two crisis clubs in ADO Den Haag and Belgian side Beerschot but didn’t manage to keep either side in the top flight amid financial mismangement.
At Dordrecht last season he narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie promotion play-offs.
