Lautaro Martinez has revealed what losing the Champions League final can do to a man.
The Inter Milan captain led his side to a second final in three years last season but there they were thumped 5-0 by PSG.
The scoreline was the heaviest in the history of the competition’s finals, and Martinez has now told La Gazzetta how much it impacted him.
“I was sad, I had trouble understanding the reasons. I didn’t speak for five or six days,” he said.
“That evening (against PSG), nothing was possible and we lost everything: it wasn’t us, we weren’t a team.
“It’s football. And now, we have to move on, there is no other solution, even if everything remains in my head.”
Now tasked with raising his teammates’ spirits ahead of the Club World Cup, he said: “I spoke with the guys, I asked them to be mentally strong.
“I explained to them that one last effort was necessary before going on vacation, one last little bit of road to travel to continue to progress.
“I am sad not to have won any trophy this season, but in hindsight, I cannot say that it was a negative season.
“That must give us the necessary impetus to leave with the same desire as always. We are Inter, we are a mature team, we always want to reach the top. We want to play this World Cup to the fullest. And I want to put all my energy into helping the team.”
