Santi Cazorla looks set to at least leave Real Oviedo at the end of the season, if not retire.
The Villarreal and Arsenal cult hero helped return his boyhood side to the top flight last season, but their LaLiga return hasn’t lived up to expectations.
The season has seen a number of low points, leading to Oviedo sitting bottom and seven points from safety with five games to play.
As such, 41-year-old Cazorla’s future has understandably become a talking point.
“I have made my decision,” he said at an awards event. “Everything in life has a beginning and an end.
“It’s not the day or the time to announce anything. The important thing is the team, and I will officially communicate it in the coming days.
“I’m focused on finishing the season, and the decision has been made, agreed upon with my family, my friends, and my club.”
Cazorla also admitted it has been a draining season where he’s hit out at the standard of refereeing on numerous occasions.
“When you get promoted after 24 years, you expect a season to enjoy, regardless of how difficult it is to avoid relegation,” he said.
“It’s been a tough year for everyone, and everything adds up when making the decision; of course, maybe if it had been a better year…
“I’ve really enjoyed playing for the club of my life , and I want to keep doing that in the remaining matches.
“We have a lot to learn from this season. It’s about club decisions, management, everyone pulling in the same direction, and not letting our love for this club fade.
“It’s essential that this club is united, at any level. This year, at times, we lost that unity, and we can’t let it happen again.”
