A sensational report from El Pais claims that Barcelona’s LaLiga match against Atletico Madrid on December 22 could be played in Miami.
The outlet cites various sources, including many at Atleti. There were previous attempts to stage a LaLiga game abroad in 2018, but the idea was shut down by FIFA, UEFA and the Spanish Football Association [RFEF].
On that occasion, it was Girona vs Barcelona, and a year later it was Villarreal vs Atleti.
Now, with a chasm at the top of the RFEF due to Luis Rubiales’ unceremonious departure, it looks like this attempt may end successfully.
El Pais add that all three governing bodies will need to approve the deal, and a request has already been lodged with FIFA.
The match would take place in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, with the state already in a football fever due to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
