At least Real Madrid and Barcelona can’t accuse him of bias.
After years of complaints between the two LaLiga giants over officiating, a new referee Appointing Committee has been announced with one familiar face.
Two-time Atletico Madrid head coach Gregorio Manzano will be tasked with appointing officials for each match alongside Fran Soto, president of the CTA, and Teixeira Vitienes a former referee.
Obviously Manzano isn’t some Atleti loyalist, but with refereeing conspiracies rife in Spanish football, his extensive past will undoubtedly be cited going forward.
In a statement, the league said: “On behalf of LALIGA, the appointed member is coach Gregorio Manzano Ballesteros, with a career spanning more than 400 matches as a national and international coach.
“In Spain, he has managed teams such as Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and RCD Mallorca, with whom he won the Copa del Rey in the 2002/03 season.
“Internationally, he coached for five seasons in the Chinese Super League with clubs such as Shanghai Shenhua and Beijing Guoan, with whom he even participated in the Chinese Champions League.”
