Despite reports that they want to let him go, Jose Mourinho is still fighting at Fenerbahce.
The 2010 European treble winner is risking the sack in Istanbul after just a year as Fenerbahce haven’t kept a coach that failed to win the league since their most successful manager Didi, 52 years ago.
Reports claim club president Ali Koc wants to let him go, but Mourinho has a staggering €18million severance clause that he’s not willing to waive.
On top of that, the club are expected to invest a record €200m this summer in an attempt to catch a Galatasaray side they’re 11 points behind with one game to go.
Mourinho clearly wants to be the one to spend that cash, and after a 4-2 loss to relegated Hatayspor was more desperate than ever to stake his claim.
“I’ve been to more European finals in the last seven years than Turkish football has in its entire history,” he told the media.
“At Fenerbahçe we even competed to be in the last Champions League, but the summer was difficult for us. We were eliminated in the last minute with a penalty.
“Our president trusts me. That is public knowledge. If the situation has changed, I have not been informed.
“Whether something turns out to be true or not, it has not come out of my mouth. I have zero contact with the press, I never reveal to anyone the meetings I have with the president and the board.”
On Fener’s poor end to the season, he added: “Only those who don’t know anything about football don’t understand what the end of the season means.
“These periods are painful for teams that no longer have any goals. Even if we had scored 12 points in the last four games, the standings wouldn’t have changed.
“People think we don’t suffer, that we go home without getting hurt. That’s not true. Players are human. Sometimes they lack self-confidence and motivation. That’s what happens when we mathematically lose the championship.”
