Jose Mourinho has burned any remaining bridges at Fenerbahce with some brutal comments at his first Benfica press conference.
The legendary coach was unveiled to the media on Thursday, signing a two-year deal at the club he first coached 25 years ago.
The agreement comes just three weeks after he was sacked by Fenerbahce following his failure to make the Champions League – losing in the final qualifier to Benfica.
Reflecting on his time in Turkey, he went in two footed, saying: “My career has been rich, I’ve coached in different countries, I made the wrong choice, but I have no regrets.
“But I’m aware of what we did well or poorly. I made a mistake going to Fenerbahce, but I gave everything until the last day.”
He then rubbed it in even further, adding: “Coaching Benfica is returning to my level.”
What else did Mourinho say?
Mourinho went trophyless in his one-and-a-bit seasons with Fener, but can’t see the same happening back in Portugal.
“I truly believe Benfica has everything it takes to win the championship,” he added.
” They’ve lost two points, and we’ll certainly lose more, hopefully not many, but we’re starting from scratch.
“Benfica has the potential in the dressing room to be champions, but I’m not hiding that. Not a promise, but the conviction that we can and should make it happen.
“The context for me is coaching one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
