Jerome Boateng’s return to football appears to be over before it even started.
The former Germany and Bayern Munich regular had been out of action since being released by Lyon in June.
Boateng had been training with Bayern, but wasn’t re-signed due to fan pressure over allegations regarding his personal life.
In January, he joined Serie A side Salernitana on the recommendation of club advisor and former teammate Franck Ribery.
After two cameos under the sacked Filippo Inzaghi, new coach Fabio Liverani started Boateng against Inter but subbed him off in the 24th minute.
“He is not able to play games,” Liverani said post-match.
“He should be thanked for his willingness, but it is clear that these challenges of great intensity are too difficult for him.”
