Italy’s 5-0 win over Estonia had a brief pause in play when a phone was thrown on the pitch, and Gennaro Gattuso knows why.
The referee blew his whistle so the object could be removed, and it came after Gattuso referenced his hate for the objects in a press conference.
The new Italy coach was asked about the lack of young players in his debut squad and came out with a golden quote.
“They’re all phenomenal on their cell phones, but on the pitch…” he answered.
The phone throw was almost certainly a reference, and Gattuso was asked what he thought of it in his post-match press conference.
“I didn’t notice, I swear,” he said.
“I was in a competitive trance. I thought they were watching the VAR.”
