With the extremely inexperienced Cristian Chivu set to be named Inter Milan’s next manager, it turns out his most famous coach could’ve got the job instead.
La Repubblica reports that Jose Mourinho was in fact first choice to replace Simone Inzaghi, along with Cesc Fabregas.
However, when Inter made an approach for their famous 2010 treble winning manager, they faced two major obstacles – his contract and the Club World Cup.
The current Fenerbahce manager has a hefty pay-off clause in his contract which is keeping him in Turkey despite a trophyless season.
On top of that, Inter want their new coach in place for the Club World Cup on June 18.
Having considered Mourinho, it quickly became clear that negotiations would’ve taken far longer than two weeks, which isn’t the case with Chivu.
La Repubblica also add that Inzaghi’s new club, Al Hilal, are pushing hard to bring Nicolo Barella along with him.
