Yet another team looks set to miss out on Como’s Cesc Fabregas with Inter Milan failing in their pursuit.
The Champions League finalists are the latest to try and sign the Spaniard after RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen failed.
According to La Gazzetta, Fabregas flew to the owner’s London offices on Wednesday to try and convince them to let him join Inter, but the answer was a resounding no.
Como president Mirwan Suwarso has now said: “We have communicated our refusal directly to the president of Inter, who has acknowledged it with the courtesy and clarity that is expected between clubs that have mutual respect.
“For this reason, we treat the persistent rumours about their interest in our coach as pure fantasy: it is unlikely that anyone would insist after such a clear answer. Especially a club of the calibre of Inter.”
Suwarso also rejected the reports that Fabregas wants to leave.
“During this entire period of speculation, our coach has never asked to leave, nor has he ever used the interest of other clubs to obtain personal or financial advantages,” he said.
“He has always behaved with dignity, sincerity and absolute professionalism. His integrity speaks louder than any voice, and we are proud to have someone of his calibre at the helm of our team.”
With Inter now scrambling to replace Simone Inzaghi, it appears that president Beppe Marotta didn’t see his star coach joining Al Hilal.
La Gazzetta claim the two leading candidates to coach the team next season are former Inter duo Cristian Chivu of Parma and Patrick Vieira of Genoa.
Despite their impressive playing careers, neither has won a top level honour as a coach.
