Francesco Totti made headlines worldwide when he talked about returning to Serie A at the age of 48, but he now insists he wasn’t joking.
Totti made the shock comments when speaking to a betting company, leading many to suggest it was just for publicity.
Totti said multiple teams have contacted him, and added: “With the level of today’s Serie A I could easily have my say on the pitch, there are no number 10s in Serie A today.
“I would have to train well, but in two or three months I would be ready.”
Well, his insistence that he would be fit enough at least has some grounding, with the Roma legend currently playing on the EA7 World Legends Padel Tour, a sport in which he’s been competing for 10 years.
Speaking at the tournament, he was challenged about his comments over a return and doubled down.
“I’ve always said that I’ll need two months,” he said. “I’m thinking about it, let’s see how my head responds, not so much but above all my body.
“It’s not a joke, I took everything seriously, there are one or two teams. Let’s see what happens, who knows what next year will bring us.”
