FC Porto have announced a contract extension with Francesco Farioli as a reward for a sublime start at the Dragao.
Farioli has extended for a year until 2028, keeping him tied to the end of Andre Villas-Boas‘ first term as club president.
A number of conditions have been added to the Italian’s contract with interest intensifying in his services.
Premier League side Chelsea were said to be after Farioli when they sacked Enzo Maresca, and Porto want more protection should they come again.
The deal comes with a €20million buyout clause, which, if activated would make Farioli the second-most expensive coach of all time.
He would place just behind Graham Potter’s €23m from Brighton to Chelsea, although that figure drops to €15m for offers made outside of the season.
The deal has also drawn comparisons to what Villas-Boas’ predecessor did with former coach Sergio Conceicao.
In 2019 Conceicao’s extension came on the eve of a huge clash against title rivals Benfica.
The boost didn’t quite work out on that occasion with a 2-1 defeat, but this time Porto face the Eagles in the Taça de Portugal quarter-finals in two days, planning to end Jose Mourinho’s hopes of a trophy.
